Mataranka

Thu (8/8) to Sat (10/8) we left Limmen NP after stopping briefly for gas at Roper Bar, named for the little cascade that bars further progress up the Roper River. Finally back on sealed road, heaven.

Before we left we had to stop and take a photo often a big poo. We've seen lots along the way through Limmen. It's buffalo - they stand still to poo, unlike cows who walk. We saw only 1 buffalo just after Borroloola.

Then on to Mataranka with the road trains from the iron ore mine. Mike was giving them cheek on the cb. Karyn was hoping we were going fast enough to stay ahead of them. Luckily we did.

We ended up at a caravan park at Bitter Springs in a lovely shaded spot in a bit of bush outside of the marked sites. Unpowered, but private and quiet.

We noticed a wobble in one of the wheels and sure enough we have done another tyre. So Mike put Baz on (thanks Barry for the loan of your spare). Now we have no spares! Mike did some research and I think we will get 5 new tyres in Katherine which is only 100km away.

It was cold at night here - got down to 5.

Our first day we got up early and walked down to the springs and spent over an hour slowly floating down the 200m. It was early enough that the mist was still rising from the water.

The rest of the day was devoted to dust removal and tyre rearrangement. I removed a fair amount of dust from inside the van and the car and washed the windows in the car.

Our second day started with floats down the springs again - this time with snorkels and a noodle. Great fun. We saw turtles. We then walked out to Mataranka Falls, an 8km round trip. Well worth the effort. We had a swim at the falls and a snack before the hot walk back. Certainly gave our legs a workout on the sandy track.

We finished the day with another float down the hot springs at dusk. Fantastic!
