We had a look at some of the camping options in Katherine and opted to drive out to the gorge and stay at the Nitmiluk camp ground. Such a different demographic to what we have been with so far. We needed a powered site for the van (Have an issue with our Anderson plug not charging the van). So we are lined up with the rest of the powered sites. Lots of rental camper vans and foreign accents. But there is a lovely cool swimming pool, which is great because it is quite hot here.
This is a very commercialised area and we were unsure of the best way to see the gorge. It is a huge area. Hiking would be hot and it seems the walks would not do the gorge justice. Seeing it from the water or air is best. Canoeing would be great, but it's hot and it would be an effort.
In the end we decided to splash out for the sunset dinner cruise. We left in a barge type boat at 4:30pm and floated up the first gorge, walked up to the second gorge where we got into another boat and floated up and back in that gorge. We then walked back to the first gorge and got onto a dinner boat that floated back down to the starting point. We were seated for dinner with a lovely family from Chicago. We really enjoyed their company. This was all done late afternoon, so the light was spectacular. For us this was by far the best way to experience the majesty of this amazing place. Would love to get put to all 13 gorges, but this would be for much younger fitter people than us.
Here are some pics from the cruise....
On Monday, after a night of wallabies keeping us awake rifling through our stuff outside the van, it was in to Katherine for new tyres, Anderson plugs and other supplies before we head in to more remote areas tomorrow.
This is the wall at the tyre shop - the 1998 flood was huge!
